The July stewardship newsletter, now online, offers understanding and suggestion for congregations that are concerned about making budget in the midst of a prolonged recession.

The lead article by the Rev. Serena Sellers, stewardship specialist, outlines how anxiety affects individuals and congregations and offers suggestions for an effective appeal:

1. Invite leaders and members with a record of generosity to respond, and then capture their joyful, inspiring stories about why they give to the church to share with the congregation when making a general appeal.
2. Don't shame or scare people into giving -- remind members about the great things your congregation is doing with the resources you have.
3. Recognize that this challenging environment is an opportunity for teaching the congregation about God's faithfulness and our joy at being part of God's plan.
