How Will You Serve on MLK Day

On January 17, we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the holiday recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All Americans are asked to honor Dr. King's memory by serving on MLK Day. He was a strong proponent for community service. How will you serve?

Many Lutherans, congregations and campus groups are already addressing serious problems in our communities through various ministries. Consider helping out with your congregation or campus group's service project during the weekend before or after January 17, and throughout the year.

Locally, Tabernacle Lutheran Church is looking for "a few good men" (and women) to participate in this year's MLK Day of Service, on Monday, January 17, 2011. On that date, volunteers are invited to gather at Tabernacle's parsonage, which has been registered as an official MLK Day of Service work site, to perform some much needed repairs. The parsonage is located at 6145 Sansom Street, in West Philadelphia.

The actual work on that date will begin after a brief devotional period at 9:30 AM, and will end at 2:30 PM. Lunch will be served at noon. A list of the repairs that need to be completed in the parsonage is as follows:

  • Repair / replace wood flooring in the bathroom
  • Replace tiles in shower
  • Remove rubbish from basement
  • Paint interior walls
  • Perform masonry repairs on basement window
  • Repair closet door in bedroom
  • repair porch roof

If you would like to participate in this project, please visit the MLK Day of Service website to register or contact our church office at 215-748-5533.
