Dungan is one of three keynote speakers at this year’s convocation, which focuses on “The Last Conversion: Head, Heart and Wallet.” The title is drawn from Martin Luther’s observation that “there are three conversions a person needs to experience: The conversion of the head; the conversion of the heart; and the conversion of the pocketbook.”

"We proclaim Jesus Christ and are fully engaged in this mission by actively caring for the world that God loves. God’s mission is serious work that calls for serious commitment. We bring all that we are—especially our rich diversity, our shared tradition and even our disagreements—in service of God’s mission. We go forward in this mission trusting that “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us” (Romans 5:5)."

Grace, guidance and gratitude

The ELCA is also welcoming people who "are coming to faith or being renewed in their faith" because of the assembly's actions, Hanson said. "We can be faithful Lutheran Christians and live with that tension in the same church body. Wouldn't it be wonderful if that became our witness?" he said. He also addressed congregations that are redirecting or withholding funds to register disagreement with the assembly's actions. "Let me tell you when that line is cut, mission and ministry is diminished throughout the world and throughout this church," he told the forum audience.

2009 Synod Assembly Summary

“We are God’s incarnational presence, the very Body of Christ, the hands and feet and FACE of our Lord,” said Bishop Claire Burkat as she unveiled the results of the year-long discernment process that involved nearly 2,000 people across the synod. It represents four strategic directions that emerged: Faith formation; Faith in Action; Connecting and communicating; and Equipping and developing. Instead of yielding a traditional strategic plan, this listening process revealed the instincts and passions of our people to grow deeper in faith and to share that faith with our neighbors in word and deed. The Assembly reflected that result, devoting significant time to hearing directions and dreams from circles of leaders who have been working in each of the strategic directions, and giving attendees time to reflect on and explore God’s call in conversation. Read more about the process at http://tinyurl.com/sepaface

A Philly Story: Faith on the Avenue

An ongoing study of congregations along the eight miles of Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia examines the changing and growing role of religious communities in urban life. The study by Dr. Katie Day of LTSP featured in Duke Divinity School's Faith & Leadership website offers interesting insights: Even though the city’s population has dwindled from its peak in 1950, the number of congregations along the Avenue has tripled over that time. A small number of mainline congregations remain and thrive by adapting, Day says, while the former buildings of other mainline congregations have been revitalized by independent churches. With everything from storefront outposts to megachurches, the Avenue offers a glimpse at how congregations are providing needed services and community cohesion, even as that role is overlooked by politicians, developers and even denominations.

"An honest accounting of what happened...must include our own repentence," the bishop wrote.

Join the Bishop in supporting Child Nutrition

"We cannot afford to let our children go hungry," Bishop Claire S. Burkat writes in a letter to the Synod urging Lutherans to make their voices heard in support of the administration's proposal to increase support of the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act by $10 billion over 10 years. A sizeable percentage of school age children in our region -- from 17% in Chester County to 76% in Philadelphia -- receive free or reduced price lunches. "Nobody is in favor of kids going hungry. This isn’t a partisan issue. But it is an issue that needs advocates," the bishop writes. Click the headline to read the entire message.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Addresses Discernment, Repentance, Reconciliation

On a recent morning walk I reflected upon familiar words from Ecclesiastes, "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven" (Ecclesiastes 3:1, NRSV). As I walked, I prayed and pondered about this time in the life of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). It is my prayer that we use this time for discerning and engaging; for repenting and reconciling; for restraint but not timidity; and for rejoicing. A Time for Discerning and Engaging Throughout the ELCA I hear people asking, "Is my voice heard? Will my voice be respected as we seek together to discern God's purpose for us?" The answer is yes. Nevertheless, people of deep faith and a desire to be part of this church wonder: Do we mean it when we say we can preach, teach and hold divergent views on sexuality and be full participants in the ELCA's life and witness? Again, the answer is yes.

Join the LDR ReadyChurch initiative

One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism, One People

"The opportunity to bring the Word of God and to baptize in the name of the Triune God in a place far away, to a people foreign to my culture, in a language not my own, was one of the highlights of my call as a pastor and a bishop," Bishop Burkat writes about her recent safari to visit our compaion synod in Tanzania. "This was truly a time when distance narrowed, offering a glimpse into God’s amazing grace!" Click to read the Bishop's message and a diary of the journey.

Tanzania Safari 2010

Remembering Sept. 11

In recent days and weeks the media have been filled with reports of controversies and discord that focus on radical fringe groups of many faiths and place religious followers in an unfavorable light. "Christians, Muslims, Jews, and people of good will of all faiths, seek ways to build bridges among our faith traditions, with mutual respect and concern for the world that we share," Bishop Burkat says in a statement. "When escalating anxieties and competing judgments claim our attention, let us to turn to God who is larger and stronger than our fears. These volatile and mercurial times are an opportunity for people of faith to pray for and promote understanding, dialogue, and peace." Read more to find Sept. 11 resources for your congregation.

Los humildes pastores fueron entonces los primeros y más entusiastas heraldos de la llegada del Salvador prometido, y hoy la alegría por el nacimiento de Jesús llena cada espacio de esta temporada.

Pray A Minute for the Synod

Our Synod’s Faith Formation team asks you to spend a daily minute in prayer for the ministries taking place across the Synod. The idea is for those interested in prayerfully supporting the work of the individuals, congregations and ministries of the Synod, as well as our bishop and staff, to make a pledge to pause one minute each day and offer up prayer on their behalf. The team suggests that you set an alarm or phone reminder at 1:11 pm each day to stop and pray. “This minute was not chosen because it is convenient, but because it is evocative; it reminds us that we are first and foremost people of prayer,” says the Rev. Leslie Richard, a spiritual director and member of the team.

Hope and Hospitality at The Welcome Church

This Maundy Thursday, people who live on the streets of Philadelphia will gather outside in the city's Logan Circle area for worship and Holy Communion. Some will also participate in the ritual of foot washing, a sign of humility and hospitality, joined by a group of podiatrists and others who happen by. They will all be part of The Welcome Church that day, a 2-year-old Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) ministry that serves people living with homelessness in downtown Philadelphia.

God made personal at Welcome Church

Remembering "the God who gets personal" and touches us in our most hidden places, The Welcome Church celebrated Maundy Thursday washing the feet of people living on the streets of Center City. The ancient ritual might have seemed out of place on a corner of Logan Square, in the shadow of corporate towers and the massive Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. But re-enacting the way Christ knelt and served his disciples reminds us that this is how all ministry begins -- we get on our knees in prayer and reach our hands out to serve, Welcome Church Pastor Violet Little said in her homily.

Vivet! He Lives!

On Easter Sunday we read Psalm 118, a song of victory, hope and gratitude for God’s mercies. This psalm was Martin Luther's favorite, one he claimed as “mine.” Particularly these words: “I shall not die, but shall live and recount the deeds of the Lord.” (vs. 17) Towards the end of Dr. Luther’s life his wife, Katherine, commissioned a stonemason to build a new entrance to their house. At the top of the arch the chief stone was inscribed with the Latin word Vivet, which means “He Lives!” It was meant to remind everyone who went out or came in that Christ lives!

Prayers in the Aftermath of Storms

Gracious God, Spring storms rage and cause destruction and despair. Reveal your life-giving presence to those who suffer from this week's storms and tornadoes in the southern United States. Console those who mourn. Strengthen those who come to help. Give courage to those who must rebuild. In the midst of devastation and uncertainty, fill us with resurrection hope that we may cling to hope and experience new life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Help ELCA Respond to Deadly Storms

What's Exciting in Your Ministry?

From the Bible to energy efficiency, from global outreach to taking prayer into the local streets, exciting things are happening in SEPA congregations. At the 2011 Synod Assembly, you told us what's going on in your church. Click through to watch the video with highlights of ministry across our synod.

Living in the Present Tense

“Our lives as we once knew them are changing,” said Bishop Claire Burkat in her May 6 address to the Synod Assembly. “Our church … (and) our world as we once knew it is changing.” She reminded those gathered that the mission we’re engaged in is God’s, not ours. Throughout the Bible God led people of faith through anxious and unsettling times. The Hebrews exiting Egypt had no idea where God was leading them. How could those witnessing the crucifixion possibly appreciate the world-changing, culture-crushing, faith-forming, and life-transforming event they were witnessing?

Millennials Challenge Church to Change

Ministry with the generation aged 10-30 today “looks more like the church of the 1st and 2nd Centuries” than the institution of the 1960s that many leaders fondly recall, said 2011 Assembly keynote speaker Dr. Rodger Nishioka. Instead of catering to a dwindling tribe of insiders, the church has the opportunity to reach out to religious “immigrants” who “have no experience with the church,” Nishioka said. Research shows that youth and young adults coming of age in the new millennium are hungry for spiritual experience rather than religious knowledge, and are open to the mysteries of faith when presented in ways that resonate with them.

Mennonites, Lutherans Reconcile 500-Year-Old Rift

Lutherans and Mennonites stood side by side at the communion table to receive the bread and the wine. Together, they then went out into the congregation to distribute the elements to those present at the 2011 assembly of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The unity observed at the table was further acknowledged during a time of reconciliation at the start of the assembly. Bishop Claire Burkat, representing the Lutherans, apologized to Pastor Charles Ness, a Franconia Conference pastor who has been involved in the global Anabaptist reconciliation movement, for the sins of 16th century Lutherans who persecuted and murdered Anabaptists during the Reformation because of doctrinal differences.

'We Are Ambassadors of Reconciliation'

In her sermon during worship, Bishop Claire Burkat opened the 2011 assembly of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod reminding those present of their vocation as ambassadors of reconciliation for Christ. “Think of the implications of this in your role as a Christian,” she said. “You are, in the eyes of the Church, an official of the highest rank representing Christ himself.”

Lutheran Testifies for Mercury Limits

The Rev. Leah Schade was one of a number of clergy who joined physicians and industry representatives invited to testify on proposed federal rules to limit mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants. Mercury affects brain development and even a small exposure can be dangerous for pregnant women and children. “I firmly believe that failure to implement these regulations would cause harm to God’s creation and exacerbate the already difficult situations for millions of our most vulnerable citizens," she said.

How You Can Help Joplin

From Kansas City, LDR-Eastern PA's Julia Menzo offers suggestions for those who want to help towns ravaged by this spring's tornado's -- Pray, Volunteer, Lead and Give. She offers this prayer for this Sunday's worship: You promise to be present in all our suffering, but we are overcome with fear and sorrow. Transform the cries of those are suffering because of tornadoes and floods. Grant consolation, courage and hope. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

'The Destruction Is Unbelievable'

"I guess pictures never fully capture...what a situation is really like, and that's how I felt driving into Joplin and then seeing Peace Lutheran and the neighborhood around it," Central States Synod Bishop Gerald Mansholt wrote in an email to colleagues after visiting Joplin Wednesday. "The destruction unbelievable, the landscape nothing bur rubble. I heard one national disaster worker say this is the worst destruction he's seen since Katrina."

Christopher Weidner, finance chair.

Commemorating 9/11, Ten Years After

ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson encourages congregations to reach out to ecumenical partners, including Muslims and Jews, to plan local 9/11 commemorations. In a May 24 letter to the church, Bishop Hanson noted that the 10th anniversary of the tragedy, just four months away, still evokes deeply personal pain for many. "Our words of healing must speak to the grief that still remains," he wrote. Bishop Hanson urged congregations to participate in inter-faith commemorations to counter the "fear of Muslims (that) all too frequently shows up in our society as public suspicion of an entire religion."

"We are freed to live as everyday evangelists, using our words and deeds to share the good news of Jesus Christ and claiming our daily work as God's calling."

Areas of the hard-hit Gulf Coast have been pummeled by strong winds, tornados and torrential rain. And in central Texas lives and homes are at risk from massive wildfires. So we pray: Loving God, creator and master of the forces of nature, be present with all those suffering the effects of wind, rain and fire. Protect those who are in immediate danger. And inspire us, who are connected through Christ to all who suffer, to lend assistance to all who need help. Through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Missionaries Blessed To Serve

“I’m sure if someone had told you even 5 years ago that you would be gladly giving away and selling your worldly possessions to serve Christ, by giving yourselves to care for infants and preschoolers and to mentor teenagers learning to be childcare workers at the Irente Children’s Home… you would have laughed -- or cried,” Bishop Burkat told Tanzania missionaries Tom and Susan MacPherson at a sending service Oct. 23. “But Our Lord, who is rich in mercy and imagination…has chosen you for this very special safari,”

ELCA Deeply Rooted in God's Mission

In his report to the Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson said that the ELCA is "a church deeply rooted in God's mission (and) in the belief that Christ frees us all to serve our neighbor and seek the common good." "Never underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit to bring forth fruit from our labors. (In 2005), this church invested in a young woman's education. Leymah Gbowee wanted to study peacemaking, and we gave her an (International Leadership) scholarship," said Hanson. Today she is one of three women who earned the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.

How PA Child Abuse Law Relates to Churches

In Pennsylvania, clergy - along with medical professionals, educators, peace officers and other who work with children - are required to report suspected child abuse, although information covered by the state's clergy privilege law is exempt. Surveys of mandated reporters indicate that there is often confusion about what is required. Look for information about the law and resources for reporting after the jump.

TZ Fund Request is a Scam

ELCA Global Mission staff report that a letter received in several synods from a pastor in Dar Es Salaam is a scam. The appeal from Pastor William Maheka Pamui, Senior Pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dar es Salaam, asks for financial contributions to be made to a bank account in New York to help provide 10 wells for clean drinking water. ELCA staff report that a regional representative in Tanzania confirms that the request is not genuine.

Purpose and Promise

"Christ is a purpose and a promise bigger than the troubles and trauma we encounter every day in our lives and our world," Bishop Claire S. Burkat writes in her Christmas message to the Synod. In all circumstances, but especially at Christmas, we can apply St. Paul's encouragement to express joy daily, pray as often as we breathe, and live in gratitude.

AIDS Day: Remembrance and Hope

Lutheran and Episcopal Christians have long been invested in improving life for persons living with HIV and AIDS, yet unless efforts are increased "we face the danger that our dream of an AIDS-free generation will remain just that," ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson and Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefforts Schori wrote in a World AIDS Day message to the churches Nov. 29. The annual commemoration on Dec. 1 "is an opportunity for us to remember the 30 million lives that have been lost to the deadly pandemic over the last three decades, to rededicate our energies in support of those 34 million living with HIV and AIDS today and to work toward building a future without AIDS," the bishops wrote.

The Man With No Shoes

Most people know him as the man with no shoes. He lives on the street and plays the piano. Some of us know him as Raymond, the English name he shares because most of us can't pronounce his Chinese name. I have heard Raymond speak of Communist China, and there is something about living in an institution where he was forced to wear ill-fitting shoes that tortured his feet; but Raymond speaks to us through the piano, the instrument he learned to play by developing a mathematical system to translate the notes....

No Injuries in Hatfield Church Fire

A New Year's Eve fire heavily damaged the old church building at Grace Lutheran Church in Hatfield. The current church and two adjacent homes were spared through the efforts of several local fire companies. The former church was used as a daycare, educational space, and home of the Laymen Playmen theatrical group. "The lost building represents many years of memories and ministry for so many people of the Hatfield area," the congregation said on its website. "The congregation is grateful to the brave firemen and other emergency responders who put out the fire and prevented damage to other structures."
